Shorten a web address

Have you ever tried to send a link, or received one, that wrapped around in your email address? Whether you're the sender or the recipient, it can be frustrating to try to click and paste a really long web address from the email to an address bar.

One solution for this is TinyURL. TinyURL allows you to enter a long domain name, which will automatically be shortened. The result will be http://tinyurl.com/xxxxx with "xxxxx" being a mix of numbers and letters that TinyURL provides. You can also try to select a custom name. For example, I wanted to use "nptech" instead of what TinyURL provides for the "xxxxx" portion of the name. So, if you come to this blog, you can use http://tinyurl.com/nptech instead of http://nptechnology.blogspot.com/. Try it out!

Why use blogger?

If you're reading this, you've already figure out my preference for blogging is using Google's blogger. There are other good options out there, including TypePad and WordPress, so why Blogger over these other two? For starters, blogger is very easy. If you can send an email, you can do a blog post. Plus, many people already have a gmail account which makes it easy for them to comment on your Blogger blog.

It's also very easy to set up a custom domain name. When you set up your blog, Google will check the availability of your preferred name and add Blogspot to it. If you want a custom domain name which will remove the "blogspot", you can get one for around $10/year. This will allow you to set up your blog with a preferred name. But.. if you're just starting out, go ahead and set up your free account to give it a try!

Which Web 2.0 sites are the most commonly used?

As you think about your Web 2.0 strategy, one question you should ask is: Which sites are the most commonly used? A good place to answer the first question is Compete. I did a search today to get a feel for the traffic on Twitter. From 12/07 - 12/08, the traffic has increased by 752.9%!!! I'm one of those people who had some doubts about using Twitter, but based on that traffic, I need to reconsider!
